You cleared the screening. How long should you wait?

21 September 2026 · 535 words · written for candidates

Clearing an assessment feels like the hard part is done. It is worth being clear about what it does and does not mean, because the answer changes what you do next.

Let us start with the part that matters most. Clearing a screening assessment means you are in a pool of candidates a consultancy can put forward. It is not an offer, it is not a guarantee of an interview, and it does not mean a job is being held for you. Anyone who tells you otherwise is doing you harm.

How a pool actually works

A consultancy holds mandates from employers. Each mandate has a role, an experience band, a salary range, a location and a joining date. When a mandate comes in, the consultancy looks through the people who cleared, and puts forward the ones who match that specific brief.

So the wait is not about your quality. It is about whether a brief has arrived that fits your experience, your salary expectation, your notice period and your location. Someone with five years in a common role may be matched in a week. Someone with a less common profile may wait longer, then match strongly when a brief finally fits.

What a reasonable timeline looks like

  • You should get an email confirming your submission immediately, with no score in it.
  • You should hear whether you cleared within a few days.
  • After that, matching is driven by incoming mandates, so nobody can honestly promise a date.
  • A good consultancy tells you when you are put forward for something, and tells you when it does not go ahead.

When to follow up

Two or three weeks after clearing is a reasonable first check in, and once a month after that is plenty. Email is better than calling, because it gets attached to your record. Send it from the address you applied with and include the role you applied for, which saves everyone a search.

What is worth updating them on, at any time: a change in your notice period, a change in what you are looking for, a new certification, and above all if you accept a job somewhere else. That last one costs you nothing and it stops you being put forward for something you cannot take.

Keep applying, everywhere

This is the important part. Being in a shortlist pool is not a reason to slow down anywhere else. Apply to other roles, take other interviews, and accept a good offer if one comes. A pool is one more line in the water, not a reason to stop fishing.

If you have been out of work for a while, or the wait is getting difficult, tell the consultancy. Sometimes there are adjacent roles, or a shorter contract, or a lower band that they had not put you against because your stated expectation was higher. They cannot offer you those options if they do not know.

What we do

We write to you either way, and if you clear, the email says you are in the shortlist pool for that role and that you should carry on with your other applications. We will never write to you as though a job has been offered when it has not. You can read the whole process, including what happens after you submit, on how it works, and if anything about your application changes, write to hr@calibrehr.in.
